During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Metal Supermarkets was deemed an essential business and all of its stores have remained open. During this challenging time, Metal Supermarkets stores have increased sales as much as 15% and we have opened multiple new stores across our international markets.

Metal Supermarkets has a large B2B customer base with a high demand for metal products needed for infrastructure, manufacturing, maintenance, and other services critical to combating COVID-19, including hospital infrastructure and the manufacturing of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nobody Cuts It Like We Do

Metal Supermarkets was the first company in the world to offer the sale of small-quantity metals, in any shape or size. The very first Metal Supermarkets location was established by William “Bill” H. Mair just outside of Toronto, Ontario in 1985. Bill, a metal executive who had worked in the industry for over 30 years, had envisioned a new kind of metal distributor that would cater to small-quantity buyers and service a wide and diverse range of industries.

While conventional metal distributors have always focused on selling large quantities of specific metals or shapes, many customers from Bill’s previous job were looking to buy small quantities of various different metals, but had no supplier to turn to. Using this knowledge as the foundation of his business, Bill founded Metal Supermarkets to fulfill a niche that was missing in the metal industry.

By providing his customers with efficient, friendly service and access to a wide variety of metals, his unique business model thrived, attracting numerous customers and prompting Metal Supermarkets to begin franchising in Canada in 1987.

The company expanded into the United Kingdom in 1994, and two years later opened its first store in the United States. Today, Metal Supermarkets has 100 brick-and-mortar stores across four countries and remains committed to the core principles and business system Bill Mair created, promising customers any metal – any time – cut and ready fast!
